ALGONQUIN PARK CANOE ATELIER

TREE NURSERY // SAWMILL // WORKSHOP // GALLERY

MASTER'S

There is a schism between the logging and eco-tourism industries present in Algonquin Park. Logging has always been an important part of the Algonquin Park identity, however it is now progressively becoming more and more hidden from the public eye because of the current negative public perception of logging in a provincial park. The goal of this project was to create a space which would expose the issues and benefits of logging in the park, as well help promote the various wood arts and crafts characteristic to Algonquin Park. This goal was supported by a series of programs interconnected to each other and to the forests of the park -a tree nursery, a sawmill, a wood workshop, and a wood art gallery. The programmatic layout of the building is inspired by three elements, firstly the vertical hierarchy of the forest: a denser massing at the canopy and root level, while keeping the middle “trunk” level void; secondly, the rotating pattern in which branches spiral out of the trunk led me to skewing the program around a central circulation core; and thirdly the ribbing patterns of cedar strip wood canoes inspired the central cladding.
