MUSKOKA COTTAGE
RESIDENTIAL // RENOVATION & ADDITION
SUULIN ARCHITECTS
The first phase of a comprehensive family compound revitalization, our task was the transformation and expansion of an existing post & beam cottage. The clients' vision included a more spacious "great" room and kitchen, ideal for accommodating larger gatherings, complemented by modernized washrooms and upgraded mechanical systems. Our approach involved strategically extending the cottage on both the east and west sides, leveraging the existing structural framework as the foundation for the design of these two additions. The existing cottage underwent a comprehensive re-cladding, bathroom remodel, and extensions & refinishing of the deck and verandas. Additionally, a new, generously sized screened-porch was seamlessly integrated into the plans. Alongside these changes, we elevated the grade along the south side of the cottage, eliminating the need for guards between the veranda and the lake to the South. In my capacity as project architect, I played a pivotal role in envisioning design alternatives for the clients, collaborating closely with mechanical and structural engineers, preparing and submitting permitting drawings to the township, participating in site meetings and reviews, and reviewing shop drawings to ensure the project's success.
