THE DeLOREAN

COLLAPSIBLE DISPLAY CASE // DESIGN BUILD

UNDERGRAD

Group project completed with Simba Mai, Jake Murray, and Sam Smallwood

The objective of this project was to design a collapsible display to be used in the University’s library. The design evolved from the interest of directing powerful moves out of simple gestures in the opening of the display case. In any design build, especially a dynamic contraption, if a step is too complicated, there is a higher chance of it failing. After experimenting with aluminum, cardboard, and card, we decided that plywood gave us the proper strength to weight ratio, while allowing us to use a simple material to work with. The entirety of the structure is CNC milled; the trussed system allows for strength while diminishing the weight of the display. Inlayed are CNCed plexiglass shelves for the display of models.
